A great way to initiate action is to make a declaration.
Declarations are “I will” or “we will” statements made by someone with the authority or influence to define a future state. They allow you to share your vision of what is to come and serve as a catalyst to action.
JFK made a declaration when, in 1962, he said, “we will send a man to the moon and return him safely by the end of the decade.” This declaration started the momentum which resulted in two men landing on – and returning from – the moon in 1969.
Elements of effective declarations are:
- Clear and concise
- Compelling and engaging
Extra Credit: Set a goal for tomorrow. Maybe you want to give out 10 compliments, or maybe you want to spend an hour at the gym. Come up with a declaration featuring the above elements to help you achieve your goal, and share it with somebody.
