Qualities of a Great Exploratory Leader

Ernest Shackleton was a polar explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic. Devoted to creating a legacy, he set out to lead what would become famously known as the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition from 1914 – 1917. Shackleton is one of the most studied explorers because he could navigate both the known and the unknown (we call this dual literacy).

When asked what he thought were the qualities of a great explorer, Shackleton said they were, in order of importance:

Optimism

Patience

Imagination

Courage

At Studio/E, we often hear some other qualities are grit, humility, humor, and passion.
